CABLE TIES HOPE

You know we love the punk trio Cable Ties here at TMR, with our most recent wordy tribute going out to the anti-capitalist anthem ‘Self Made Man’. With the imminent release of the band’s new album, we have a final taster to present to you. ‘Hope’ takes a more restrained approach than we’ve heard before from Cable Ties, that is at least for the first couple of minutes. Centered around a shoegazey guitar and Jenny McKechnie’s conversational drawl, the singer regales us with that talk she had with Uncle Pete and catching her breath running for the train. This everyday mundanity comes into sharp focus as a metaphor for self-reflection and the raw realisation that “it might be hopeless, / But if I lose hope, / I’ll bring on that ending.” Cable Ties use that eureka moment as a launchpad for what they do best - make plenty of riotous noise. For the next four minutes and forty-three seconds, the Melbourne trio propel the feeling of hope through searing guitar lines, formidable drums and powerful vocals. It’s suitable then that ‘Hope’ represents a mission statement of sorts for the track, as McKechnie puts it: "Hope isn’t a passive emotion. It’s not about sitting back in your chair and figuring that everything will be fine and it will work out for the best somehow. It’s about having hope that you are a person who can make positive change and that society as a whole is full of people like you, who ultimately want the best for everyone and who can find a way to work together to overcome the challenges we face."
